Retiring at 60 is now, for many teachers, 7 or 8 years early. Retiring from teaching at 55 used to be common place, but that is now 12 or 13 years before the normal pension age of many teachers. How many people will be able to afford to do that without some form of prior planning? One plan allowed for normal retirement at age 45 with 10 years of earned service, and eight of the 16 provided for normal retirement when members had 20 or 25 years of earned service, regardless of age.

To qualify, you must reduce your pensionable salary by 20 per cent or more for at least 12 months. The reduction in salary is compared to your average salary over the previous 6 months. For members of the Teachers’ Pension Scheme (TPS) who joined before 2007, the ‘normal pension age’ is 60. However, they are able to choose to retire once they reach 55 by taking an ‘actuarially reduced benefits’ from their pension based on salary and length of service. Once you reach your Normal Pension Age (NPA) and provided you’re out of service you should claim your benefits. If you continue in pensionable service after you reach your NPA your benefits will be paid from the last day of pensionable service.

Your NPA depends on your exact age and when you started teaching. For many, the state pension age is already 68 and this will only rise.
